Businesses today deal with a huge range of risks on many different levels. One of the threats faced by all companies, irrespective of size, is losing sensitive data. “Sensitive data” by definition is “the core business”. These two terms are so interdependent, they can almost be equated. If a company’s sensitive information is leaked or stolen, then its business could be affected severely by various external parties; most likely by the firm’s competitors.
Many businesses do not take this threat to their data seriously for example, the leakage of quotations to a tender project would have a traumatic effect if it were stolen or copied by
a competitor.
There are three main ways in which sensitive data can be leaked out of a company:
1) By Insider theft
2) By extracting information from a remote area
3) Or by an insecure physical location
(such as exposed entrances for intruders)
